The Small Castle
Built around 1725 the "Small Castle" is a little sandstone garden castle framed by an inviting old baroque terraced garden with water fountains and a set of sandstone sculptures. The building keeps a museum with 14 exhibition rooms and a hall used for concerts and special exhibitions.
Visitors of the exhibition rooms are made familiar with the local history. Two divisions deal with past and present of Blankenburg. Division I focuses on the history of the ducal residence during the first half of the 18th century. Special topics are:
- marriage policy of the dukes Anton Ulrich and Ludwig Rudolph of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel
- the influence of the ducal reign on town and region
- life at the ducal court
- history of the castles and gardens
Division II relates to the development of Blankenburg during the last two centuries.
Topics dealt with are:
- trade, industry and transport
- consequences of World War I and II
- the youngest past - Blankenburg a modern health-resort
A regional history Library with valuable bibliophilic accounts (17th century) may be seen as a "round up" of the visit.
